by Terah Kathryn Collins

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the Water Dragon arrives on January 23rd bringing the Feng Shui principle “Everything is always changing” into full play. Although the Dragon’s natural element is Wood, 2012 is associated with the Water element, making this the Year of the Water Dragon. In the Chinese Five Element theory, Water nurtures Wood, fueling the Dragon’s already powerful strength and vitality. The Water element is associated with spirituality and Wood with intuition, promising to lift spiritual and intuitive veils and enhance your extra-sensory perceptions. Meditation and other practices that deepen your relationship with the Unseen world will go a long way in helping you remain calm, clear, and connected throughout this year’s profusion of inner and outer transformations.

If you haven’t already de-cluttered your material world and released excess possessions, now’s the time! The same cleansing and clearing process is also vital within your body, mind, and heart. Create space for the Dragon to land by attending to any stagnant areas in your life. This year’s gifts can only be fully received by the unencumbered. The lighter you are on all levels, the better.

The only mythical animal of the twelve in Chinese astrology, the Dragon is known for bringing Heaven to Earth and making dreams come true. “Watch what you wish for, ’cause you’re going to get it,” is a phrase to remember as synchronicities multiply, breathing life into whatever you pray and wish for. Visions you’ve been holding deep within your heart, such as experiencing loving community, lasting peace, spiritual illumination, and restoration of Mother Earth become potently activated and, like magic, could manifest ‘right before your eyes.’ And, the changes that accommodate such manifestations can occur in any size or shape, underlining the importance of cultivating your lightness of being and doing.

The magnanimous spirit of the Dragon is entwined with a practical, no-nonsense attitude that simply reveals what is so. This is no year for secrets of any kind. Truth will prevail as all that has been personally and collectively hidden is exposed to the light. This could make for some very interesting ‘plays’ in the Theater of Life.

With the growing, flowing attributes of Wood and Water leading the way this year, dreams could launch without a stable platform in place. Feng Shui observes that the qualities of the other three elements – Fire, Earth, and Metal – can balance Wood and Water and help you to birth your dreams into a healthy existence. Attend to the emotional well-being of the people in your life, taking the time to ‘tend the fire’ and create warm, harmonious relationships. Honor every step of the earthy physical processes that provide a firm foundation and keep you organized. Maintain mental clarity by thinking things through, forging creative collaborations, and refining your choices along the way. Taking all five elements into consideration can widen synchronistic pathways and help you be in the right place with the right people at the right time.

This is the year to turn-up the magic in your life and let it shine. Consider how you can weave more wonder into every day. Open yourself to the vast realms of inner guidance and outer communion with all ‘who’ surround you. Spend as much time as you can connecting with expansive natural settings and drinking in the elixir of Mother Nature’s ever-present majesty. Let the Dragon guide you in bridging Heaven and Earth in your life, then step throughthe portals of magic as they open, ready to be enchanted!

Tis the Season of Gifts, whether we like it or not! I have learned that when I approach gift-giving ‘from the heart,’ it transforms a forced march into a series of delightful opportunities to deeply connect with my loved ones and my community.

Hearfelt gift-giving often begins in our local communities, where our gift-dollars can support the talents and efforts of those who live around us.

Gift-certificates from local businesses can make fabulous one-of-a-kind gifts that honor your loved ones’ unique tastes and interests. These include restaurant or garden center certificates, club memberships, and yoga, dance, or art classes. Services from local salons and spas are often special treats, as well as tickets to the theater and other live performances.

Our local artists and crafts people make their living creating beautiful jewelry, clothing, pottery, and handicrafts that are essentially original art at affordable prices. When we know the artist, it deepens the meaning of the gift as we share the story of how it was made, what inspired the artist to make it, etc.

YOU may be the artist or gift-maker! Instead of shopping, you may find it is much more fun to spend time in your kitchen or studio making your own love-infused gifts.

Re-gifting has also become a popular way of keeping things ‘in the flow.’ When you receive a gift that you’d rather not keep, consider who would love it and pass it on! Collectively, we seem to be losing all interest in accumulating goods that do not make our hearts sing.

And, heartfelt gift-giving can reach outside of our local communities into any other community in the world via the many organizations who are helping people improve their lives. One of my favorites is KIVA, who gives micro-loans to help people fund their businesses. As soon as the loans are paid back, the money is available to be loaned again. Several years ago, I gave $25 in honor of each of my family members and these gifts have now been re-loaned 29 times, and counting – truly gifts that keep giving!

Whether you shop locally or globally, enjoy the flurry of synchronicities that await you! Your heartfelt choices carry your loving intentions and expand the meaningful connections you have with those you love.

Dear Terah,
I am a complete Feng Shui novice. I am trying to get as much info as I can and have hit a proverbial bump in the road. Some Feng Shui authorities are stating that if I don’t do the cures, bagua map, etc…correctly I can actually do more harm than good. I don’t want to work with anything that could create dark energy. Is there a dark energy regarding Feng Shui? Initially I thought Feng Shui would be fantastic in helping me create a cheerful and positive environment, however it seems to be very daunting and I would really like some sound advice. Any advice would be helpful.

Dear Enthusiast,
Thanks for your inquiry!

I’d say everything has a dark side. We keep the Light On at the Western School of Feng Shui by guiding people to feel for themselves what Good Feng Shui is for them. We offer fluid guidelines that give people the opportunity to tune in and decide whether each guideline resonates with them. For instance, one person may sleep well in a bedroom with several mirrors while another person doesn’t. One person may enjoy being surrounded by heirlooms and another finds them oppressive. The list of personal preferences is endless, making it important (in my opinion) to maintain fluidity and respect when guiding people in creating the most supportive, happy-making environment possible for them. Essentially it’s a very personal, Inside-Out process using a plethora of Outside-In suggestions to help individuals create spaces that are “just right” for them.

Learning how to become an Essential Feng Shui Practitioner and how to apply these fluid guidelines is what we teach here at the Western School of Feng Shui. You may be interested in joining us. People have been coming from around the world for our Practitioner Training since 1996.

All of the details are here: http://www.westernschooloffengshui.com/practitioner.php

Know that you are always guided by the Light!
With Every Blessing,
Terah Kathryn Collins

Terah Kathryn Collins, best-selling author and originator of Essential Feng Shui, joins ZOOM’D to discuss her recent inspirational book, The Three Sisters of the Tao: Essential Conversations with Chinese Medicine, I Ching, and Feng Shui, and to provide insights into creating and sustaining a fulfilling heart-centered life. As leadership in the coming era of change calls for deep understanding and wisdom, it also must be underpinned by deep connection with the heart and an infused sense of love. Terah brings to life the essential path of harmony (the Tao—the Way) through provocative dialogue with the three sisters of the Tao: Chinese medicine, which restores tranquility with a calming presence and illuminated creativity; the I Ching, a harmonizing of heart and mind which calls forth full expression of the true self; and Feng Shui, which imbues surroundings with rhythmic resonance, opening us to a living symphony of sacred space. Join ZOOM’D for this enlightening discussion.
