By Linda Kay Marchena, WSFS Alumna

2012 is a year that adds up to 5. The 5 with the 2′s and 1 in 2012 tell a story of what type of energy we need to work with this coming year. It will be important for all of us to be flexible, for this will be a year of change. Five is a number about freedom, flexibility, change, travel, legal and/or government issues, confronting situations or setting limits and boundaries with those around us.

This would be a year for us to look at our lives to see what changes we want to or need to make. Then it is up to us to make the decisions and take the action to make those changes. It is easier for us to adjust to change when we implement the change, instead of having a change forced upon us.

Here are some questions to ask ourselves during a 5 year. What changes do I need to or want to make? What do I need to do to implement these changes? How can I make these changes that are forced on me work to my advantage? What can I do right now to keep me going in the direction I want? The more we use these questions to make decisions and take action, then the more likely we will be able to find solutions or make progress to our goals.

We should stay away from focusing on negative thoughts about the changes, as that could drain our energy, and may cause us not to make the changes we need to.

If legal or government situations should arise they could could end up working to our advantage.

If we work with the energy of the 5 year we will head towards a better quality of life during the 6 and 7 year (2013 and 2014).

To find out specifically how 2012 will affect you read the article I wrote for 2011 entitled “The Year 2011 and How to Use the Energy of the Year by Numerology (Personal Year, Personal Month, And Personal Day)”. This article will tell you how to calculate your Personal Year Number and what that will mean for you in 2012. You will find a link to this article on the Fun and Free page of my website http://www.alifebydesign.net/FunandFree.html

Tis the Season of Gifts, whether we like it or not! I have learned that when I approach gift-giving ‘from the heart,’ it transforms a forced march into a series of delightful opportunities to deeply connect with my loved ones and my community.

Hearfelt gift-giving often begins in our local communities, where our gift-dollars can support the talents and efforts of those who live around us.

Gift-certificates from local businesses can make fabulous one-of-a-kind gifts that honor your loved ones’ unique tastes and interests. These include restaurant or garden center certificates, club memberships, and yoga, dance, or art classes. Services from local salons and spas are often special treats, as well as tickets to the theater and other live performances.

Our local artists and crafts people make their living creating beautiful jewelry, clothing, pottery, and handicrafts that are essentially original art at affordable prices. When we know the artist, it deepens the meaning of the gift as we share the story of how it was made, what inspired the artist to make it, etc.

YOU may be the artist or gift-maker! Instead of shopping, you may find it is much more fun to spend time in your kitchen or studio making your own love-infused gifts.

Re-gifting has also become a popular way of keeping things ‘in the flow.’ When you receive a gift that you’d rather not keep, consider who would love it and pass it on! Collectively, we seem to be losing all interest in accumulating goods that do not make our hearts sing.

And, heartfelt gift-giving can reach outside of our local communities into any other community in the world via the many organizations who are helping people improve their lives. One of my favorites is KIVA, who gives micro-loans to help people fund their businesses. As soon as the loans are paid back, the money is available to be loaned again. Several years ago, I gave $25 in honor of each of my family members and these gifts have now been re-loaned 29 times, and counting – truly gifts that keep giving!

Whether you shop locally or globally, enjoy the flurry of synchronicities that await you! Your heartfelt choices carry your loving intentions and expand the meaningful connections you have with those you love.

A few weeks ago I had a very fun Feng Shui consultation. Because it was the home as well as the office and studio, we did the consultation on each room of the house and all three who lived and worked there walked the consultation with me.

The art studio was “creative chaos” at it’s best. Julia, the artist, said her business was doing well but she felt overwhelmed with all the clutter and felt she had no room to to put things and to create. We talked about de-cluttering and reorganizing and balancing the room. She got right on it and within 3 days had cleaned up and reorganized her studio with all the suggestions we made. A few days later she was asked to be one of the artists to paint a cow for the “Cow Parade Austin,” which is sponsored by many different organizations, and is a huge opportunity and complement for an Austin Artist to be asked.

Austin is well known for its Painted Guitars and Painted Cows!

The Cows are painted, taken to a warehouse, judged, auctioned off, displayed in the “Cow Parade Austin,” and then taken to their new homes all over town. This is all a Fundraiser and all proceeds go to the Dell Children’s Hospital of Austin.

Ester Eloise was completed a few days ago and is now at the Cow warehouse. We can’t wait to see her at the private showing this coming week and the Parade to follow. It has been so much fun following this process with Julia and Ester Eloise.
I am very touched. I also wish to apologize for a generic message to you all. But it seems the best way at the moment to get my message to you.

Things here in Sendai have been rather surreal. But I am very blessed to have wonderful friends who are helping me a lot. Since my shack is even more worthy of that name, I am now staying at a friend's home. We share supplies like water, food and a kerosene heater. We sleep lined up in one room, eat by candlelight, share stories. It is warm, friendly, and beautiful.

During the day we help each other clean up the mess in our homes. People sit in their cars, looking at news on their navigation screens, or line up to get drinking water when a source is open. If someone has water running in their home, they put out sign so people can come to fill up their jugs and buckets.

Utterly amazingly where I am there has been no looting, no pushing in lines. People leave their front door open, as it is safer when an
earthquake strikes. People keep saying, "Oh, this is how it used to be in the old days when everyone helped one another."

Quakes keep coming. Last night they struck about every 15 minutes. Sirens are constant and helicopters pass overhead often.

We got water for a few hours in our homes last night, and now it is for half a day. Electricity came on this afternoon. Gas has not yet come on.

But all of this is by area. Some people have these things, others do not. No one has washed for several days. We feel grubby, but there are so much more important concerns than that for us now. I love this peeling away of non-essentials. Living fully on the level of instinct, of intuition, of caring, of what is needed for survival, not just of me, but of the entire group.

There are strange parallel universes happening. Houses a mess in some places, yet then a house with futons or laundry out drying in the sun. People lining up for water and food, and yet a few people out walking their dogs. All happening at the same time.

Other unexpected touches of beauty are first, the silence at night. No cars. No one out on the streets. And the heavens at night are scattered with stars. I usually can see about two, but now the whole sky is filled. The mountains are Sendai are solid and with the crisp air we can see them silhouetted against the sky magnificently.

And the Japanese themselves are so wonderful. I come back to my shack to check on it each day, now to send this e-mail since the electricity is on, and I find food and water left in my entranceway. I have no idea from whom, but it is there. Old men in green hats go from door to door checking to see if everyone is OK. People talk to complete strangers asking if they need help. I see no signs of fear. Resignation, yes, but fear or panic, no.

They tell us we can expect aftershocks, and even other major quakes, for another month or more. And we are getting constant tremors, rolls, shaking, rumbling. I am blessed in that I live in a part of Sendai that is a bit elevated, a bit more solid than other parts. So, so far this area is better off than others. Last night my friend's husband came in from the country, bringing food and water. Blessed again.

Somehow at this time I realize from direct experience that there is indeed an enormous Cosmic evolutionary step that is occurring all over the world right at this moment. And somehow as I experience the events happening now in Japan, I can feel my heart opening very wide. My brother asked me if I felt so small because of all that is happening. I don't. Rather, I feel as part of something happening that much larger than myself. This wave of birthing (worldwide) is hard, and yet magnificent.

Thank you again for your care and Love of me,

With Love in return, to you all,

Ann

I spent a bit of time online earlier today checking and responding to some Facebook sites that were discussing or looking for information on protecting ourselves from what appears to be the coming radiation from the reactor explosions and meltdowns following the tsunamis in Japan. One of the results was that I was asked to post some information to help all of us separate physiology from hysteria.

Let's talk about protecting ourselves and our loved ones from the fall-out.

Most of the discussions I have seen so far are focused on taking iodine, particularly potassium iodide. So, let's talk about the use of potassium iodide, also known by its chemical abbreviation "KI".

If you are within 10-50 miles of a reactor meltdown, radioactive iodine will connect to any and all iodine receptor cites that have no iodine in them. This is a serious problem because, according to Dr. David Brownstein, over 90 percent of people in North America are iodine deficient. This leaves them incredibly vulnerable to radioactive iodine, which is one of the principle forms of radiation given off in nuclear accidents and from nuclear weapons. By taking a dose of about 130 mg of KI, the receptor sites are filled and there is nowhere for the radioactive iodine to be absorbed. As Dr. Leah Remeika Dugan describes it, KI fills up all the chairs and when the music stops, there is nowhere for the radioactive iodine to go.

This sounds like a good idea, except that KI-dosing is only effective for about 24 hours and doing it more than twice starts pushing the envelope of toxicity. Doing it even once is likely to make real trouble for anyone with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Since KI is rapidly going into short supply across America and unless you are in the immediate vicinity of a nuclear accident, this is really not an effective strategy.

On top of that, uranium, cesium, and plutonium have half-lives measured in years, so what do we do after the first 24-48 hours? Let's look at a few other strategies. "Roll, duck, and cover", popularized in the 1950's, doesn't work, and the use of plastic and duct tape, suggested a few years ago by one-time FEMA head Ron Chertoff, is also pretty ineffective.

That said, there are some things which we can do to help strengthen and protect ourselves from the inside out. Two of the body parts most sensitive to radiation are the thyroid and the kidneys.

Beyond the use of iodine, one of the few things which will actively protect the thyroid from longer term exposure to radiation, like that we can expect from the Japanese reactors, is the body's most powerful anti-oxidant: Glutathione. The thyroid uses glutathione, a combination of three amino acids (glycine, glutamine, and cysteine), protectively as an antioxidant or free radical quencher and as a cofactor that makes it possible for one of its most important enzymes (5'-deiodinase) to work. If we try to take glutathione as a supplement, it doesn't work very well because it's a big molecule that has trouble getting through the wall of the small intestine into the blood stream. The body has to break it down into its three parts then reconstitute it on the other side once absorbed. That is a lot of work and expense and inefficiency.

One alternative is to supplement the three amino acids individually or in a combination like Thorne Research's Solvent Remover formula. Another is to use a transdermal glutathione crème which can actually cross the skin and enter the blood stream. Sabre Sciences in San Diego makes a very good crème that combines glutathione with two other major free radical quenchers, SOD and Catalase. My family and I are taking Solvent Remover and using the transdermal creme. We also use Metabolic Maintenance's glycine sticks. These individual packets each contain 3 grams of glycine (very sweet tasting) that can be used instead of sugar in coffee and tea, on cereal, etc. Along with the glutathione precursors, it is a good idea to take a source of methyl-selenium-cysteine which helps the glutathione keep working. You don't need to take more than about 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium per day and it starts getting toxic at 4-5 times that level. There are a number of brands of methyl-selenium-cysteine (not to be confused with seleno-methionine which does not do the same thing). Some, like Jarrow, are available in health food stores and some, like Complementary Prescriptions, are available through functional medicine doctors' offices.

The other remedy is one of the oldest, least expensive, most readily available remedies in this country. It has been used for years by the military to protect soldiers' kidneys from uranium and cesium exposure and you can pick it up in any market and most convenience stores across North America. In fact you may already have some in your refrigerator RIGHT NOW. I am talking about sodium bicarbonate or, as most of us know it, baking soda. Yup, good old Arm and Hammer Baking Soda that may already be hiding in the back of your refrigerator and that you can pick up almost anywhere. For less than $2 a box. At Ralph's or Von's or even Whole Foods.

According to Dr. Mark Sircus of the International Medical Veritas Association: "The kidneys are usually the first organs to show chemical damage upon uranium exposure. Old military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if this happens. This makes the uranyl ion less kidney-toxic and promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium-carbonate complex. The oral administration of sodium bicarbonate diminishes the severity of the changes produced by uranium in the kidneys.

"So useful and strong is sodium bicarbonate that at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, researcher Don York has used baking soda to clean soil contaminated with uranium. Sodium bicarbonate binds with uranium, separating it from the dirt; so far, York has removed as much as 92 percent of the uranium from contaminated soil samples. If the bombs start dropping anywhere on earth, or if you live near a nuclear plant, you will want to have a large amount of sodium bicarbonate on hand. Minimum stocks should be 25 or 50 pounds (nb: I think this is overkill. Dr. Jim). Normally I recommend someone start with using one pound of bicarbonate in a bath but that could easily be two or three pounds in an emergency situation. It is not a joke that one can get 50 pounds of the most powerful medicines on earth for 35 bucks. You will also need a lot of magnesium salts and the very best and most penetrating of them is the magnesium chloride in the form of magnesium bath flakes. Dead Sea salt is also quite fine for this application.

"Spirulina and chlorella were also used heavily by the Russians after the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. The Japanese love their miso soup that was said to help some of their citizens survive the fallout after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tan Koon Peng from Singapore writes: "Miso is effective for detoxifying your body of radiation. During World War II, two hospitals that were located side by side were hit with atomic radiation, in one hospital people consumed Miso and all of them survived while many people in the other hospital that did not take miso died. Miso is rich in vitamin B therefore it is suitable for vegetarians who are in shortage of vitamin B. For best results do not cook miso."

With all of the uncertainties in the world, this is a very good time for us to be taking care of each other. It is also a good time for us to be taking care of ourselves and I hope these tips will help you live a longer, healthier, happier life.

Contributed by Karen Carrasco, Instructor at the Western School of Feng Shui

Beginning on February 3rd, 2011, we enter the Chinese year of the Metal Hare or Rabbit. We can all feel the new energies upon us, so let's take a look. This will be a year to regain our footing after the rip-roaring Metal Tiger year of 2010. The Year of the Rabbit in general is considered a very fortunate year, a Yin year in which the feminine, intuitive influences of our benevolent Moon shine into every heart. Rabbit qualities are considered some of the most desirable for comfortable living and fortunate longevity, as, unlike our western image of the soft, domesticated bunny, the eastern understanding finds the Hare to be one of the most strong willed, clever and agile of the animal signs.
Rabbit years contain the same strengths as people born in a rabbit year–calmness, astute heart-centered consideration, a love of order and stability. It is a year that rewards a keen sense of watching which way the wind blows, using your "whiskers" for the directional knowledge to accomplish goals. The long ears of the rabbit invite us to listen very carefully. Cooperation, compromise and diplomacy are all skills highly rewarded in this year. The ability to proceed with informed methodical precision and intuitive sensibility brings ultimate success. The rabbit nature loves beauty, art, music and the finer things in life, and will bring these things to those who seek them with grounded confidence.
While Rabbit years in general are more low key and restful, encouraging feminine receptivity, 2011 is also a Metal element year, which brings the dynamic mental body into focus. Metal strengthens our ability to see with renewed clarity what is personally valuable, and to cut out that which we no longer desire. This will be another year of distilling the essentials–cleansing the impurities, low vibrations and clutter from every corner of our lives. The big difference between Tiger Metal, 2010, and Rabbit Metal, 2011, is the Great Feminine, the lunar influence, and the upsurge of our own powerful intuitive bodies. This means we will have a most helpful tool–our "gut" feeling about anything, sharpened and honed to precision, ready to guide the way–especially when we calm down and quiet our inner dialog well enough to hear it, and act quickly, like the clever wild hare who knows just which way to jump at a moment's notice.
This year will be a year to catch your breath and calm your nerves. A year to focus on home, family, security, and diplomacy. Let yourself relax into the gentle waves of steady, fortunate progress that is there for us all.
