I was inspired this morning while reflecting on 3 separate conversations from yesterday. They both were business conversations that paralleled a common theme; that being the “challenges” of being a woman entrepreneur and the freedom to follow our life’s passions, of which we’ve unlocked somewhere between our 30-50’s.

As women we’re generally caregivers, the paths we choose is often one that follows this innate instinct, but what we find is that we lose our main focus when first stepping into our power. Our supressed yang/masculine side starts to take over; it’s all new to us, this flexing of our outward expression. We start thinking about the money aspect otherwise known as getting to the finish line and miss all the wonderful experiences along the way.
As a feng shui consultant I ponder this behaviour, that I to sometimes step into when there is a lull in the number of calls for scheduling bookings. It’s moments like this that the universe presents a call, or an email from someone who has read one of my articles and is moved to call and tell me that my writing has touched them, “it was like you were talking to me, about me,” or a client who is so excited about an amazing feng shui experience and explains. “Feng Shui really does work! You won’t believe what just happened…..”

These universal movements of clarity remind me that in my purest intention to be fully living my truth and through sharing the joy of doing so with my deepest desire to assist others to be empowered has a way of gracing me with many fortunate blessings. I do not think we truly understand the depths of what we emote affects others. If an article, book, website can touch someone you don’t even know, what kind of energy do we emote when we’re networking with others?
We pay good money to mingle and network with other “professionals”, yet if we are simply emoting a need to brag about our services, and our sights are filled with dollar signs and a belief system built on lack and competition have we provided a disservices for both ourselves and those we claim we desire to assist?
I do not like the word help. I’ve had discussions about this with a male friend of mine from back home who in a period of my life when I was nurturing my inner feng shui, strongly suggested I get back into my healing work and “Help” others. Help to me translates into or suggests that something or someone is broken. Although I am passionate and yes, rather opinionated I don’t want to perceive the world as broken. I would rather view the world and everyone in it as connected and in doing so understand that there are situations in each of our lives when a little assistance is required. I know, I know the term lend a helping hand. Although I sometimes fall into my own trap, (again for me,) Help often means doing something for someone, and I know from personal experience that no one can truly do anything for me. Empowerment is achieved through self-actualization. Therefore; achieving is obtained through personal endeavours. To me assistance can be a word, statement, physical act that empowers a friend, client, colleague to achieve and express their very best self and often results in an AHA moment. Semantics I know but this is the way my mind works.
Back to the reason for this article; We’re feng shui consultants; we know that energy is a tangible living thing, therefore, all the networking in the world won’t bring about what we desire, if what we are emoting is that it’s all about us. Potential clients won’t be inclined to book appointments because they don’t resonate with what we are emoting. They may not understand what put them off when what we we’re saying made logical sense to them. They will know that something just didn’t feel right with the exchange of energy. And we leave the networking shuffle feeling lost and disappointed, when really the only thing we lost was our focus. That being the sole reason we felt passionate about stepping into our life path in the first place.
I think these experiences mirror to us, where we need to feng shui. In that I don’t necessarily mean hanging a public media profile in our fame and reputation gua, but sit in our knowledge and self-cultivation gua to quietly ponder how we may step into a little inner feng shui to assist in balancing and promoting our business of feng shui while maintaining our personal integrity and goal of how we may assist others. To me it’s a matter of taking the oars out of the water and letting the current take us there. (However, friends have seen me frantically dog paddling against the waves. I do get caught in the undertow sometimes.) It’s not about the bragging rights but the sharing in our successes as we are only successful because of the people who believe in whom we are and what we have to offer.
I personally struggle with what I was raised to believe in regards to humility defined by the dictionary as (hu•mil•i•ty; the quality or condition of being humble; modest opinion or estimate of one’s own importance, rank, et.) and how to self-promote my own personal business.

With social media the playing field is vast, yet I struggle with posting media features, various accomplishments, and client testimonials. I hear my mother’s voice telling me not to brag, of which I never did growing up because I never had any confidence. I was the geeky girl in school who as tormented daily by both girls and boys who felt the need to throw crayfish in my hair. Brag; I never had anything to brag about.
So here I sit writing and pondering the spiritual way of social media marketing my feng shui business. Even the Dahlia Lama has a face book page. I personally don’t view the media posts as boastful but informative and inspiring. I desire to come from integrity, modesty while informing the public of the many benefits of feng shui and yes my services. Yet; I still struggle with an inner dialog every time I make a post and in doing so check my intention. When I hit the send button I ask that the message be received in the intention it was written and given. Ah; the yin dance in a yang dominate world.
A colleague and friend of mine mentioned the number of certifications listed on my website. Through my filters I interpreted her to be saying I had something to look at in my need for certifications. This had me pondering “was it bragging” to list my credentials? Is a website similar to a resume? And if so what is the most professional spiritual way to market one’s business when one’s business is an extension of oneself?
How about competition, other practitioners in our city, state? Do we feel intimidated, a sense of lack? Or can we rejoice in the global expansion of feng shui knowledge and community. Is it better to see ourselves as working together for the common good of the whole, do we keep secrets or do we share the love. I’ve had moments that catch my breath, until my inner voice reminds me to breathe and relax. I’ve felt territorial as I’m breaking ground here in Saskatoon, SK. which has promoted a quick edit of my website to enhance my credentials. Again bragging or motivation to assist others in identifying qualified information and professional services? Or an old paradigm of lack and greed? I openly share with others who call me asking for advice on education and certification. I share marketing ideas, and suppliers. Yet; I admit to having a moment of gray and decided to shine the light on my way. We may be on a Soul Journey but we don’t have to live it alone. I’d rather live in a community than live on a mountain in solitude.
For me my intention is always to be mindful, to be inspired and inspire others with peace, love and kindness otherwise known as groovienns. My personal motto is love lives here now. My personal challenge is dance the dance between humility, honesty, humour, and humanity.
Even here now I find myself having to explain the reason behind the inspiration of this article, this self-analytical dialogue. As I check in with spirit I’m reminded that I am not alone and that if I am as a female struggling with humility and marketing my own personal business that I am not alone. And that again, it comes from intention. It is the Three Sacred Reinforcement of the mundane and transcendental cures. Yes; I changed secret to sacred, I believe that knowledge is universal and sacred is to be shared with others. Secret is superstation sacred is love, again my own filters.
So this is my Three Sacred Reinforcements for my Feng Shui Business;
Identify my intentions;
Initiate Action; Discern the message and appropriate method of delivery.
Inspire Transformation; Write, post, contact, networking, facebook, twitter, clubs, organizations, alumni, etc. Know my message and deliver with humility, honesty, integrity. Be open to both giving and receiving.
Detach from the outcome, and trust in many fortunate blessings.
Contemplations of inner dialogue and professional feng shui mussing’s.
I was a pre-op nurse, interviewing patients for surgery. The room that I worked from was no bigger than a closet. Having only 15-30 minutes to gather pertinent information, it was important for the patients to feel safe and comfortable upon entering the space; Hospitals can be so scary and impersonal.

Using principles of Feng Shui, I surrounded myself with things that I loved….antique quilts from home, pictures of loved ones, a display board of children’s hand-made art. I replaced the stark fluorescent lighting with lamps and torchiers provided a warm glow to the room. To create a cozy feel, I included live plants, flowers, music and enticing smells warming in a crock pot.

Amazing things happened….my "little closet" became a magnet! Everyone was attracted to this space!

The anesthesiologists would often ask to use the room to make phone calls. Co-workers would stop by to sit in the recliner to have a reprieve from the hectic hospital routine. Patients would bring their families by on the day of their surgery….”just to see the room” one more time.

But the biggest surprise for me was when the hospital’s Head of Joint Commission came in with the Director of Nursing and said to me, “I don’t know what you have done in here….but what ever it is….it just feels good!”

People can enjoy the magic of Feng Shui by simply stepping into a space the size of a closet.

Big magic can happen in tiny spaces.

Dear Terah,

I’m a friend and colleague of Mark, [from a local non-profit agency]. We are working on a project and I spent the last couple of weeks in San Diego. When telling Mark about my interest in learning more about Feng Shui, he enthusiastically shared your book with me. I was captivated!!! I immediately went to Barnes & Noble to buy my own copy (Room by Room version) and began devouring it on the plane home to Australia (I’m an American expat).

Mark kindly shared your email address with me so that I could tell you how much I adore the book and the insight related to the inner work that is required in addition to outer. I will be employing your advice and cannot wait to get started on the house!!

Thank you so very much. Your book is inspirational and enlightening. Love it!!!

Kind Regards,

Q. I am considering renting a space to do a colon hydrotherapy business in the "prosperity" section of a large day spa establishment, but the owner (somewhat aware of feng shui) expressed concern that due to the nature of my business (flushing things down the drain!) it might not be the best thing for the health and properity of my business!

I disagree- colonics are about promoting balance and flow in people’s lives, and I think that any potential conflicts in the purpose/bagua can be offset with the use of some good feng shui strategy. Am I correct in my thinking, or does she have a valid concern?

I would greatly appreciate a response. Hope you are doing great! Leslie S. Arizona

A. Here’s my thoughts on your being in the spa’s Prosperity area. Feng Shui springs from Taoism, which observes that all things in Nature are equal, each with their own unique gifts to give. When a colonic area is set up to be aesthetically pleasing, clean, and fully functional, it is an equal member of the family of treatments that are available to the client. We can give more meaning to colonics by saying that they remove the old to make room for the new. This is a key in creating Prosperity – to remove anything old that blocks the full receiving of the new. Colonics are the archetype of this flow of energy.

I hope this helps. Please know that if the spa wishes to consult with a Feng Shui practitioner, we have an Essential Feng Shui Consultants Directory.
With Love and Blessings, Terah
Location, layout improves business environment, productivity

The Republic of Tea, one of Novato’s more recognizable companies, has created a successful niche purveying a product many use to relax and unwind. But for employees of the company, that state of mind isn’t a luxury reserved for after-hours. It’s an environment the Republic uses to improve conditions at work.

The strategy seems to have worked for the importer, which has grown large enough to move its headquarters from its previous location on Digital Drive to Hangar 5 at the Hamilton Landing. There, according to “Minister of Enlightenment” Meredith Post, who heads the company’s media relations, The Republic of Tea has used the ancient Chinese art of feng shui to arrange its office environment. Management believes the fastidiously arranged office space will improve conditions for employees and impress prospective and returning buyers, benefiting the corporation on multiple levels.

The location of the new office was the first step in creating the preferred atmosphere for employees, said Post.

“We just moved (to Hamilton Landing) on May 21,” she said. “We had just grown to the point that we needed more space, but we’re very committed to staying in Novato … (and) we loved what they’re doing at Hamilton.”

The office park, which has received recognition for its “green” design and mix of tenants, was a good fit, said Post.

“There are a lot of artists, and people who are creative for a living. Whether we’re talking about game designers at Take Two or Nihilistic, or (employees of) Birkenstock and Smith & Hawken, we liked the overall vibe and feel of Hamilton,” she said. “It was like a college campus, we could go on the grass for lunch, it’s a dog-friendly space. We like walking on the levee, and how they are environmentally-sensitive about how they run the complex.”

However, inside the company’s leasing space, The Republic of Tea’s design aspirations took charge.

“Barbara Lyons Stewart, who is based in San Anselmo, did our design and architecture for us,” said Post. “You can take and existing space and make it feng shui, but here, we were able to get more space to allow her to design (completely). Everything should be functional, comfortable and understated.”

From the basic architecture to the layout of furniture, the office has been designed to accommodate both comfort and functionality.

“This wall is sort of the core of the office, so it’s the color red, which means power, the fire color,” said Post, motioning towards a thick support structure in the center of the forward office space. “It means strength; it’s powerful. It creates a sense of foundation. Also, for example, this post here is green because it emulates a tree. Feng shui is connected to nature, so it’s kind of a grounding item.”

The different rooms are also designed in relation to one another.

“This is the power-corner of the office,” said Post, pointing to a room to the rear left of the main entrance. “So it needs to have light on it at all times, and there has to be something moving constantly, so we put a lava lamp in it. We thought that was funny.”

Antique furniture allows the office to stay simple without looking sterile, Post said.

“This is an antique piece,” she said, pointing to a bench in the office’s “Peach Tea Room,” where management meets with clients. “One of the things we did was to mix the modern with the antique … One of the guiding principles of feng shui is clean, uncluttered space. But you have to run an office efficiently and practically as well. So you’ll see a more modern boardroom table, but surrounded by vintage pieces.”

Ergonomics and etiquette also guided the design of office cubicles, she said.

“You can see here a mirror (on a desk top) which is a feng shui touch, because you’re back should never be to another person, So that gives you the option to face who’s behind you while working with them,” said Post.

If workspace organization has value for any company, it is especially important for the Republic of Tea. The high-art of aesthetic tea preparation is accommodated by the layout of their product-demonstration room.

“We have these cupboards with wooden poles (just beneath the counter-top),” said Post. “You can pull them out, and then you have a tray here where you can brew the tea and pour it, and it showcases the tea. And it kind of sets like this, where you have the leaves here, and you have the cups of tea here.”

In addition to selling clients on the merits of the product, tea-preparing is always available to employees, both for relaxation, and to keep them knowledgeable and interested in their business.

Post said the use of feng shui for layout had been very successful for the company, and garnered appreciation from employees. The company’s next move will be to expand the idea to encompass other locations owned by the company.

“We have a number of employees, including a distribution center in the Midwest,” she said. “ That will have similar characteristics (to the Novato office), like similar lamps and things like that to connect (employees’ environments). Our warehouse is even feng shui designed.”
